THERE IS NO LEATHER LIKE LEATHER

Basic differences between Genuine Leather and Eco Leather

“I like to wear black, especially leather, or even faux leather! It just adds edge and a sense of class and maturity to your outfit!" (Jeffree Star)

Leather - a material that has evoked in people a feeling of luxury, naturalness, smoothness to the touch and durability for ages. Leather is simply always stylish and gives a person who dresses in it an extreme sense of self-confidence, even without the rest of his "styling" needing other expensive pieces. But what about Eco leather? Can resist time? And can one achieve the same feeling and visual efficiency with it as with genuine leather?

What is Eco Leather and what is it made of?

By the term eco-leather we mean any alternative to leather that don´t come from animals. Enthusiasts of sustainable fashion liked this variant mainly because, apart from the fact that eco leather is cruelty-free, at first glance it is almost identical to genuine leather. Its purest form is made of purely vegan materials that evoke the feeling and appearance of real leather in the user. Among the most widely used vegan materials, PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and PU (polyurethane) are used in its production. PVC is made from a textile leather base, which is covered with a foam layer, then a leather layer and finally finished with a plastic finish. Most people cannot even tell the difference between PU eco-leather and animal leather at first touch. It is wearable, luxurious and most importantly guilt-free.

How long does Eco Leather last?

One of the biggest concerns when buying clothes made of Eco leather is its durability. However, the truth is that Eco leather is less likely to crack, peel, stain or fade under the influence of UV radiation. Since no plastics are used in Eco leather made from PU, it don´t have fragility or brittleness. Maintenance of this leather is much easier than in the case of animal skin. Most of it can be cleaned very easily with a cloth and warm water, while animal leather can start to crack over time as moisture remains in the material.

Eco Leather, High Fashion and Sustainability.

Luxury fashion brands are currently focusing on sustainable alternatives to vegan leather. And thanks to the general development of these alternatives, which are now made from all sorts of substances (pineapple fibers, apple waste, palm leaves and even wine), this option is becoming more and more popular in the field of High Fashion. These materials are sometimes even more attractive than plastic-based fabrics, to which the term "vegan leather" was limited for several years. Some of the world's biggest fashion brands are currently following the example set years ago by Stella McCartney and incorporating new leather alternatives into their production processes, contributing to greener practices in the fashion industry.
